On side A of this LP by pianists Lucas and Arthur Jussen you will find CANTUS – six tracks based on an aria or chorale melody. The first is a special arrangement for two pianos of the Aria ‘Aus Liebe will mein Heiland sterben’ from Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. Then follow three chorale arrangements by Johannes Brahms. He wrote these for organ, but his good friend Eusebius Mandyczewski arranged them for piano four-hands. The German composer Reinhard Febel made a re-work of Bach’s ‘Erbarm dich mein, o Herre Gott’ BWV721, also for piano four-hands. Lucas and Arthur Jussen conclude CANTUS with the version for two pianos of Arvo Pärt’s ‘Pari Intervallo’.
On side B is RÊVE: beautiful French, impressionistic piano music by lesser-known composers such as Reynaldo Hahn, Charles Koechlin and Germaine Tailleferre. Mostly unknown works, which will certainly appeal to you if you like listening to quiet, melodic piano music.
